SIHH 2011: Officine Panerai Radiomir 3 Days Platino PAM00376

SIHH 2010. Officine Panerai launched three big 47mm Radiomir Special Edition watches at SIHH 2011. Each watch is encased in case made of precious metals, from which the watch derives its name: the PAM 373 Platino (Platinum), the PAM 376 Oro Blanco (White Gold) and the PAM 379 Oro Rosa (Rose Gold). Being a Special Edition, this watch will see a limited production, with only 299 PAM 376 to be manufactured.

Officine Panerai Radiomir 3 Days Platino PAM00376. In 1936, the Italian Navy asked Officine Panerai to develop a watch that could withstand extreme conditions and could be easy to read underwater and in the dark. To meet this requirement a watch with a large 47mm face, large luminous hands and numerals was created. The name Radiomir came from the self-luminescent material used to paint the hands and numerals on the dial of the watch.
The PAM 376 has the so-called "California Dial" which has a rather odd looking combination of Roman numerals, Arabic numbers and stick and triangle markers on its face. The California Dial was used by some Panerai and Rolex watches manufactured in the 1930's. It should be recalled that back than, Panerai watches used Rolex movements, so a certain degree of sharing in design did occur between the two companies. In the 1980's a company based in California, USA, refurbish the dials of several vintage Rolex watches with the combination Roman numerals and Arabic number dials, anf the dial got the name, "California Dial." As near as I can surmise, these dial was the result of Panerai experiments at perfecting the high visibility dial.

The PAM 376's case is 47 mm large and made of white gold. Like several other watches announced by Paneria at SIHH 2011, this one also has a Plexiglas crystal. Water resistance is rated at 100 meters.

P.3000 calibre. The PAM 373 is powered by Officine Panerai's new P.3000 calibre. This is an in-house movement entirely designed by Officine Panerai and manufactured in Neuchâtel facility. The P.3000 calibre has a three day power reserve and produces 21,600 vibrations per hour. The movement can be viewed through a sapphire crystal case back.

PAM26 Luminor Marina Left Handed SE 2008

The Panerai PAM26 is a special edition watch from the year 2008 (K). Panerai produced 1,000 pieces of the watch. The PAM26 is a so called "Destro" watch, which means it is intended for left-handed people or in any case, to be worn on the right wrist. The crown and its crown guard are positioned on the 9 o'clock position as opposed to the 3 o'clock position where it normally is.

The PAM26 has a steel 44mm case with a hard black coating (PVD). The color of the PVD coating is slightly lighter than that of e.g. the ceramic PAM292 and slightly darker than that of the PAM28. Its color is often referred to as "charcoal gray" or "pencil gray".

The 44mm case is steel with a hard black coating (PVD)

In an interview with Panerai CEO Angelo Bonati, he stated that Panerai started working on a ceramic case because they had to find a substitute for PVD. Because there is a buyer's demand for black watches but PVD can have problems with scratching etc. and once the PVD is scratched, you can do nothing to fix it. Something to keep in mind if you are looking into buying yourself a PVD watch.

The dial of the PAM26 is a black sandwich dial and the color of the Luminova is green. The PAM26 has a sub seconds dial at the three o'clock position where it normally is positioned on the nine o'clock position. The movement is a hand-wound mechanical Panerai OP II calibre with a power reserve of 56 hours.

The watch is a re-edition of the regular production original PAM26 that Panerai produced in 1998 (200 units) and 1999 (500 units). The original PAM26 in the A-series had a so called painted tritium dial as opposed to the 26K which has a sandwich dial.

Apparently there are only 60 to 70 units in the B-series that also came with a transitional Tritium dial with T SWISS T underneath the six. The other units in the B-series came with a Luminova dial. The 2008 SE is a collectible watch that generally sells above its original list price but the 1998 original is of course much more rare and valuable as a result.

Panerai Pam 292 Ceremic Black seal Radiomir!!

Panerai Radiomir PAM 00292

Black Panerai. The black Radiomir PAM 292 released by Panerai in 2007, was not their first Black Panerai. Panerai had already previously released the PAM 004, which was a black Luminor Marina and PAM 009 was a Black Luminor. These watches were made using stainless steel cases with a "black" coat applied via physical vapor deposition (PVD). PVD is a method of depositing thin films by the condensation of a vaporized form of the material onto various surfaces. It basically means depositing a layer metal onto another. These Panerai PVD watches were made of stainless steel, coated with titanium nitride. This gave the watches a "black" or "gun metal" finish.

The problem with PVD coating is that they can get scratched as easily as stainless steel, and if scratch badly enough, the stainless steel case of the watch would be exposed. Unlike a stainless steel watch, you can not simply buff out scratches, and re-coating the watch would be relatively expensive.

Panerai Radiomir PAM 292.
In 2007 Panerai released another Black Panerai. The Radiomir PAM 292. The PAM 292 belongs to Panerai's historic line. It uses a hand wound Panerai OP X movement, which is a Panerai modified ETA 6497 movement. The movement produces 21,600 vibrations per hour and has a 55 hour power reserve. The watch is encased in a 45 mm case which has a 100m water resistance rating.

The interesting about this watch is not its movement, but its finish. Unlike most black watches in the market, it does not use PVD. It is a ceramic coated watch. The ceramic used is Zirconium Oxide and it is molded from powder using a process of isostatic pressure instead of being cast. This process make it extreme durability, reputedly five times tougher than 316L steel, it also highly resistant to scratches and corrosion.

This finish is also now being used on the special edition Luminor PAM 00026 andLuminor PAM 317.

Panerai wristwatch photo blog: Vissuto straps for Panerai by Maikel Lau

Panerai wristwatch photo blog: Vissuto straps for Panerai by Maikel Lau

Vissuto straps for Panerai by Maikel Lau

Maikel Lau - a friend and well known Paneristi from the Netherlands - previously sold straps under the name LVL straps. Now that Maikel is continuing his strap endeavors on his own, he changed the name to Vissuto. I took pictures of five different new Vissuto straps. It goes without saying that the specifications of each of these straps have been carefully thought through, and of course the straps are made to meet Maikel's high quality standards.

VISSUTO NITA STRAP

The first strap in this post is the Nita strap. Its color is mustard and the leather used is very supple and it has a very nice texture. This strap comes with a sewn-in straight GPF buckle with a hand brushed finish. The strap has one fixed and one floating keeper.

The above photo shows the texture of this strap quite well.

VISSUTO VINTAGE MUSTARD

The second strap - and one of my favorites from this batch - is the Vintage Mustard. The color of this strap is really very nice and according to Maikel the strap will develop a great patina and it will become darker as it ages.

The above photo shows the inside of the strap. The Vissuto name is stamped on the inside of all of the straps. The Vintage Mustard strap also comes with a sewn-in GPF style buckle.

VISSUTO WASHED CALF

The Vissuto Washed Calf strap

The third new Vissuto strap in this post is the so called Washed Calf strap that's shown above. This strap has a nice vintage feel to it. The strap is 24mm (like all other straps in this post) and this one too comes with a sewn-in buckle. This buckle however is slightly bent.

I didn't take pictures of this strap on a watch but if there would have been an opportunity, I bet this one would look great on the Panerai 2A. Or on the zero.

VISSUTO ANTIQUE GATOR

The second to last new Vissuto strap is the Antique Gator. A perfect match for the DLC PAM360 - because of its cream colored stitches that look great together with the beige color of the numbers on the dial, and because this strap tapers from 24mm to 22mm.

The buckle shown in the above photo is the original 22mm OEM Panerai buckle that came with the PAM360. FYI this strap is sold without a sewn-in buckle so that you can use any OEM buckle for any Panerai watch.

No alligator strap will look exactly alike because the scales are always a bit different, but I really love the scales on this particular piece of leather. This is certainly one of the nicest alligator straps I've seen. The finish of the the strap is slightly glossy but not too much.

The above photo nicely shows how the finish is slightly glossy

VISSUTO SIENNA II

The final strap in this post is the Sienna II strap - I've had this strap for a while and it's simply stunning. It's made to the specifications of the orginal PAV strap and although I don't own any PAV straps myself, I'm pretty sure that this strap comes very close to the original.

Vissuto Sienna II strap / Panerai PAM360

The Sienna II strap is one of those straps that will really amaze you. There are quite a few great looking combos for the PAM360, but this is one of my all time favorites. It's just perfect. In case you own a LVL Sienna strap, the specifications and leather of this Sienna II strap are completely different. As much as I like the first one, this new Sienna II strap is much nicer in my opinion.

Panerai Hot News 2011 Release!!

One of the most interesting timepieces to be unveiled by Panerai at SIHH 2011, aside from the Bronzo, was the Panerai Radiomir 8 Day Ceramica.
The Radiomir has the smallest diameter within the men's collection. At 45 mm (Radiomors are also available in 42 mm), it features Panerai's signature style, but with a few less millimeters in diameter and no oversized crown guard, making it one of the most comfortable Panerai's.
The new Radiomir has a substantial 8-Day power-reserve. Powered by not two, but three barrels. The P2002/3 is a very impressive calibre in Panerai's growing lineup of in-house manufacture movements. The mechanical hand-wound movement runs at 28,800 vph (4Hz), has 21 jewels, a monometallic Glucydur balance, KIF Parechoc anti-shock protection and a total of 225 components. The movement, which is not highly decorated, is still very nice looking when viewed through the sapphire caseback.
The case is made of a synthetic ceramic, made of zirconium oxide (ZrO2), a material obtained through a process of isostatic pressure on the material in powder form, which results in a uniform and even finish. Ceramic cases are very hard, with the benefit of high scratch and corrosion resistance. It is also resistance to high temperatures (although I'm not sure when it will ever be subjected to high temperatures, while strapped to your wrist).
The dial is clean and very simple, with a prominent 8-Day linear power reserve indicator at 6 o'clock. The strap is made of soft black leather with a large titanium buckle, coated in black DLC. Water-resistance in 100 meters. Limited to 500 pieces worldwide.
Officine Panerai Press Release
"With the new Radiomir 8 Days Ceramica - 45 mm, Officine Panerai presents the combination of a high-tech material, ceramic, and a Panerai movement entirely developed and produced in the manufacture in Neuchâtel: the hand-wound P.2002/3 calibre.
Ceramic has for some years established itself as a material of choice in the world of haute horlogerie for its appearance, its hardness and its resistance to scratches, corrosive agents and high temperatures. The synthetic ceramic used by Officine Panerai for the case of the Radiomir 8 Days Ceramica - 45 mm is zirconium oxide (ZrO2), a material obtained through a process of isostatic pressure on the material in powder form, which results in a particularly uniform, even appearance.
The Panerai hand-wound P.2002/3 calibre has a power reserve of eight days and it is notable for its three spring barrels and the linear power reserve indicator on the dial. As well as the date at 3 o'clock, the calibre also has the device which enables the hour hand to be rapidly adjusted without interfering with the movement of the minute hand.
The Radiomir 8 Days Ceramica - 45 mm has a completely black appearance, both in its ceramic cushion case and its dial with the characteristic sandwich construction, as well as in the buffalo leather strap closed by a titanium buckle with DLC (diamond-like carbon) coating. The back too is consistent with this appearance, having a smoked sapphire crystal window through which the movement can be seen. All the characteristic elements of the dial - the large figures and hour markers, the hands and the small seconds dial at 9 o'clock, the date window and the linear power reserve indicator - are covered with a layer of special ecru Super-LumiNova®.
Produced in only 500 units, the Radiomir 8 Days Ceramica - 45 mm (PAM00384) is part of the Historic Collection."
